Do I Have Sleep Apnea, or Am I Just Snoring?

Sleep apnea and snoring have similar symptoms but they are very different issues. Here are a few of the differences between sleep apnea and snoring.

Sleep apnea sufferers often think that they are just snoring, and are unaware that they have this serious condition.

In fact, sleep apnea and snoring do share many common elements: both are related to breathing problems during sleep, each may be connected to other health issues, and both can disrupt proper sleep patterns.

That said, there are also some important distinctions between the two.

Snoring

Snoring happens when air movement is obstructed and causes vibrations in the respiratory structures while a person is sleeping. An elongated soft palate, a large tongue, the uvula, or nasal obstructions are some of the most common causes of the airway obstruction.

While it's true that snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea, it's important to note that not everyone who has sleep apnea will necessarily snore.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious condition characterized by shallow breathing or abnormal pauses in breathing during sleep. The reasons why these pauses or "apneas" happen are; a physical blockage to airflow, a lack of respiratory effort, or a combination of the both. The most common form of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) which is caused by such a blockage.

It's not unusual for people suffering from sleep apnea to be unaware that they have the condition, and often it is their sleep partner who first points it out.
